Lee to Host Civitasolis Reed Quintet in Guest Concert

Cleveland, TN (09/29/2026) — On Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 6 p.m., Lee University's School of Music will host a guest concert featuring the Civitasolis Reed Quintet in the Squires Recital Hall, located in the Humanities Building.

"We are delighted to welcome the Civitasolis Reed Quintet to Lee University," said Dr. Jesse McConnell, director of music events at Lee. "Their inventive artistry and commitment to engaging audiences will offer our students and community an inspiring musical experience."

The performance will feature selections from Marc Mellits, Luke Ellard, Ton ter Doest, and David Biedenbender.

The members of the Civitasolis Reed Quintet include Dr. Amy Humberd, clarinet; Shawn Karson, bassoon; Dr. Beth King-Bennett, saxophone; Ryan Pereira, bass clarinet; and Dr. Luis Gallo Quintero, oboe.

Humberd has performed as a soloist and chamber musician across the United States and Europe. She has presented at leading conferences and regularly serves as a substitute clarinetist with the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra. She currently serves as assistant professor of clarinet at Lee University.

Karson performs as second bassoonist, contrabassoonist, and guest principal bassoonist in various orchestras across the country. A devoted teacher, Karson also serves as a private lesson instructor and masterclass presenter for a large private studio of students in and around Central Texas.

King-Bennett is a performer, educator, and advocate for new music. She has presented performances and masterclasses nationally and internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. She serves as an adjunct instructor of music at Dallas College-Richland and on the faculty at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and Great Plains Saxophone Workshop.

Pereira currently serves as the principal clarinetist with the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra. Aside from performing, Pereira is the founder of Pereira 3D Clarinet Services where he manufactures instruments and custom instrument accessories through 3D printing technology.

Quintero has had a vibrant career both as a soloist and as an orchestral musician, winning the Northwestern State University concerto competition in 2018 and performing in prominent concert halls such as Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and Konzerthaus in Vienna as part of the Filarmonica Joven de Colombia.

Established in 2017 at the Florida State University College of Music, the Civitasolis Reed Quintet is dedicated to engaging, interactive concert experiences. The diversity of timbre of each instrument is integral to the quintet, which presents music from a wide range of genres that is well informed by classical music, jazz, metal, and Latin American music, among other genres.

The evening concert is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public. The event will also be available for livestream viewing at leeu.live.
