Lee University to Host The Story Program Conference

Cleveland, TN (09/16/2026) — Lee University will host The Story Program conference, "Jesus, The Church, and Disability," Sept. 25-26, offering practical and theological guidance for churches seeking to create more inclusive ministries for people with disabilities.

"We are excited that the conference will explore both reasons and ways to welcome and include children, teens, and adults of all abilities into the life and ministry of our churches," said Dr. Lisa Long, professor of practical theology and director of The Story Program.

The conference will explore disability-inclusive ministry from theological, educational, and practical perspectives. Lee alumna Abby Copeland will examine the biblical and theological foundations of disability-inclusive ministry, while Dr. Shane Brown, director of Lee's teacher education program and field experience, will offer practical guidance for churches interested in starting a disability ministry. Shalee Lastoria, a faculty member in Lee's College of Education, will address ways to support children with disabilities and create welcoming environments, and Associate Professor of Special Education Dr. Kimberly Moffett will discuss behavior and strategies for working with individuals with disabilities.

Dr. Alex Sandoval, associate professor of special education and chair of Lee's Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, and Special Education, will provide an introduction to disabilities, including autism, Alzheimer's disease, and related dementias. Together, the sessions will equip participants with both a theological foundation and practical tools for creating more welcoming church communities for people of all abilities.

"We look forward to a time of learning and growing together in conversation while we thoughtfully examine theological and biblical foundations of disability-inclusive ministry from the perspective of educational theory and practice," said Long.

The Story Program, an initiative of Lee University, partners with local churches to explore creative ways to share the story of the Gospel and personal stories of faith with children.

The conference is free and includes lunch on Saturday. All sessions will take place in the Jones Lecture Hall, located in the School of Theology & Ministry.
