Lee Criminal Justice Students Get Firsthand Look at TDOC Mobile Unit
Cleveland, TN (11/05/2026) — On Tuesday, Oct. 20, the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) brought its mobile community supervision unit to Lee University's campus, where criminal justice students toured the unit and learned about its role in supporting individuals on probation and parole.
The mobile unit serves counties where individuals under community supervision may have limited access to transportation and the internet. Equipped with chairs, desks, Wi-Fi, and TDOC employees, the unit provides a convenient location for individuals to meet reporting requirements, stay compliant with court orders, and access additional resources. Its goal is to support individuals as they transition back into their communities.
"This was a great practical experience for the students to learn and see the actual implementation of Tennessee Department of Correction's policy on working with, supervising, and mentoring individuals on state probation and parole," said Dr. Dennis Bowman, part-time faculty member in Lee's Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
The visit gave students an opportunity to connect what they have studied in the classroom with the day-to-day work of correctional professionals.
"I really enjoyed the experience," said Isabella Valentine, a senior criminal justice major with a minor in psychology. "It was interesting to learn more about the field of criminal justice and how the mobile unit benefits individuals in the community."
Lee University's criminal justice program prepares students for careers in law enforcement, corrections, and the courts through a curriculum focused on criminal law, criminology, and investigative practices. The program emphasizes critical thinking, ethical leadership, and applied learning, equipping graduates for professional roles and advanced study.
